Russia Weighs in on Japan Nuclear Stance Discussions
Japanese media outlets reported last month that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who also leads the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was contemplating launching consultations with allies regarding revision of the nation's three non-nuclear principles—enduring commitments against possessing, manufacturing, or allowing nuclear weapons introduction. Takaichi reportedly believes that banning nuclear weapon deployment on Japanese territory undermines US nuclear deterrence capabilities.
During an interview Saturday, Rudenko acknowledged Russia's awareness of ongoing nuclear policy debates within Japan, emphasizing Moscow's firm opposition.
"We believe that the militarization of Japan would only worsen the situation in Northeast Asia and... would provoke appropriate countermeasures by countries threatened by that militarization," Rudenko stated. He added: "Our position is unequivocally negative."
The controversy escalated this week when an unidentified senior official from Takaichi's office generated backlash by declaring to reporters, "We should possess nuclear weapons," citing Japan's deteriorating security environment as justification while conceding the political obstacles to such action.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara subsequently affirmed Japan's nuclear policy remains unchanged, restating the government's adherence to non-nuclear principles.
Japan's non-nuclear position is fundamentally linked to its post-war identity as the sole nation to experience nuclear attack, following the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Rather than cultivating an independent nuclear arsenal, Japan has depended on the US nuclear umbrella for decades.
