N. Korea Warns Against Japan's Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons Capability
"The war criminal state Japan's attempt to go nuclear must be prevented at any cost as it will bring mankind a great disaster," a press statement released by the director of the Institute for Japan Studies under the North Korean Foreign Ministry read.
The sharp rebuke followed Japanese media coverage revealing that an unnamed source within the Japanese prime minister's office told journalists during an unofficial exchange that Tokyo "needs to possess nuclear weapons."
Political backlash erupted immediately across Japan's legislative spectrum, with lawmakers from government and opposition benches alike demanding the official's dismissal.
Japan reaffirmed Friday its adherence to "maintain the so-called three non-nuclear principles, which prohibit possessing, producing or permitting the introduction of nuclear arms."
As the sole nation to endure atomic warfare, Tokyo remains committed to pursuing "realistic and practical measures to achieve a world without nuclear weapons" under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told a news conference.
The US unleashed atomic devastation on Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945, claiming approximately 140,000 lives. Three days later, a second strike decimated Nagasaki, killing an additional 70,000 people.
